Village of Galičnik, North Macedonia
What is Galičnik Art Colony?
In the heart of the mountain village of Galičnik, a unique art story has been evolving for 36 years. More than just an artistic residency, the Galičnik Art Colony is a space of cultural dialogue, critical theory, and contemporary expression, where the traditional meets the avant-garde.
Over time, it has grown into a singular phenomenon in the regional art scene – turning away from classical easel painting and embracing digital art, video, sound, hybrid media, and theoretical discourse. It brings together artists, theorists, and curators in an environment full of memory, silence, and unspoken layers of history.
2025 Concept: “Postmemory – Echo of Silence”.Motto: “I listen to everything that was never told to me
This year’s edition focuses on the concept of postmemory – a mode of remembrance passed down through generations who didn’t experience the events themselves, yet carry the emotional and cultural traces through stories never told, photos never explained, objects never used.
Inspired by thinkers like Marianne Hirsch, Aleida Assmann, Roland Barthes, and W.G. Sebald, the colony asks:
How does silence become part of memory?
What is the link between personal and collective trauma?
How do we build identity around something we never lived—but deeply feel?
