Known as cultural, art and educational center in the Slavic world,  in the area known as Desaretia. In the Ancient time, known by the name Lichnidos (the City of light), becomes an important trade center. Always interesting for various conquerors, the city was fought over by Romans, Ostrogots, Crusaders and Byzantines etc.In the IX and X Century AD Ohrid becomes a center of Slavic literacy, in the times when St. Clement of Ohrid organizes the First Panslavic University in Europe and creates the Cyrillic Alphabet. By the end of the X and beginning of the XI Century, Ohrid is the center of Samuel Empire.As an important Christian center, it becomes a place where new styles of fresco and icon painting were found, as well as specific sacral architecture (St. Clement, St. Sofia, St. Jovan of Kaneo, etc.).In the medieval times it was the Seat of Ohrid Archbishopric. A city with 365 churches in the XIX Century, and with more than 50 active churches today, and certainly, a city built on the shores of one of the most phenomenal natural beauties - Ohrid Lake, is a central Macedonian tourist destination and second administrative center, after Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. The church of St. Jovan Kaneo from 13th century is the symbol of Ohrid,(From St. Jovan Kaneo you can have boat trip so you can have magnificent view on Ohrid and its surroundings. The boat will take you to the city harbour.)
